HULK HOGAN - Real Name is Terry Eugene Bollea was born on August 11, 1953, in Augusta, Georgia, USA.
EARLY LIFE.
Terry Eugene Bollea, who would go on to
become the world-famous "Hulk Hogan," was born in Augusta, Georgia,
and raised in Tampa, Florida. He is of Italian, French, and Panamanian descent.
As a child, Terry showed a deep interest in sports, particularly baseball and
wrestling. He played Little League baseball and even attracted scouts from the
New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds. However, injuries and an eventual shift
in interest led him away from baseball and towards music and bodybuilding.
He also developed a love for professional
wrestling during his teenage years and was heavily inspired by wrestling
legends like Dusty Rhodes and "Superstar" Billy Graham. Hogan
attended Hillsborough Community College and later the University of South
Florida but dropped out to pursue a career in music and then wrestling.
EARLY CAREER IN WRESTLING.
Hogan began his wrestling training in the
mid-1970s under the guidance of Hiro Matsuda. During his very first day of
training, Matsuda broke Hogan's leg to test his commitment. Hogan returned to
training after recovering and proved his dedication.
He initially wrestled under names like Terry
Boulder, Sterling Golden, and The Super
Destroyer. In 1979, while working for the World Wrestling Association,
he caught the attention of Vince McMahon Sr., who ran the World Wide
Wrestling Federation, (WWWF), (which would later become WWE). He was
soon renamed "Hulk Hogan", partly due to his massive
physique resembling that of comic book hero The Incredible Hulk.
RISE TO SUPERSTARDOM – WWE
(1980s).
Hulk Hogan's rise to global superstardom
began when he joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF),
under the leadership of Vince McMahon Jr., in the early 1980s.
His charisma, immense physical presence (standing over 6 feet 7 inches tall),
and appeal to mainstream America made him a perfect centerpiece for McMahon's
national expansion of WWF.
Key Achievements of Hogan -
In 1984 Hogan won his first WWF Championship
by defeating The Iron Sheik at Madison Square Garden.
He became the face
of the "Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection," blending music, pop culture,
and wrestling, bringing in millions of new fans.
He headlined WrestleMania
I in 1985, teaming with Mr. T in a huge event that helped catapult WWF
into mainstream fame.
His catchphrases
like “Whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you?”, his
red and yellow gear, and his "Hulk Up" antics became iconic.
He became a
five-time WWF Champion during the 1980s and early 90s.
Hogan became a pop culture icon, appearing on
TV shows, cartoons, ("Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n'
Wrestling"), and movies like Rocky III in
(1982), No Holds Barred in (1989), and Suburban Commando in (1991).
WCW ERA – HOLLYWOOD HOGAN
& NWO (1990s)
In 1994, Hulk Hogan made a historic move to World
Championship Wrestling, (WCW), where he initially continued his
"real American" babyface character. However, by 1996, his popularity
began to wane. To revive his career, he turned villain for the first time in
years and formed the New World Order, (nWo) with Kevin
Nash and Scott Hall.
As “Hollywood Hogan”, he
adopted a black-and-white color scheme, a goatee, and a cocky attitude. This
heel turn revolutionized wrestling and helped WCW dominate WWF in ratings for
83 consecutive weeks during the "Monday Night Wars."
Hogan became WCW World Heavyweight
Champion six times and played a central role in WCW's biggest
storylines until its decline and eventual purchase by WWF in 2001.
RETURN TO WWE.
Hogan returned to WWE in 2002 and was
inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 by Sylvester
Stallone. He rekindled feuds with stars like The Rock, (at WrestleMania
X8) and Shawn Michaels, and briefly held the WWE
Undisputed Championship.
He also performed in a popular tag team with
Edge and appeared on WWE programming until 2006, mostly in a part-time
capacity.
From 2009 to 2013, Hogan worked for TNA,
(Total Nonstop Action Wrestling) as an on-screen authority figure and
behind-the-scenes consultant. His presence brought attention to the company,
although his run was mixed in terms of impact.
Hogan was married to Linda Claridge
from 1983 to 2009. They have two children: Brooke Hogan, (a
singer and reality TV personality) and Nick Hogan.
In the 2000s, Hogan became the focus of the
reality show “Hogan Knows Best,” which aired on VH1 and showed
his life as a family man.
He later married Jennifer McDaniel
in 2010, but they divorced in 2021.
Hogan faced several controversies like -
In 2012, a sex
tape was leaked online, involving Hogan and the wife of his
then-friend.
In 2015, he was
caught making racially insensitive remarks in the leaked tape.
WWE severed ties with him and removed him from their Hall of Fame page.
In 2018, Hogan was
reinstated into the WWE Hall of Fame after issuing several public apologies.
Hogan has also been involved in various
