"BRICK" - AN AMERICAN NEO-NOIR CRIME THRILLER MOVIE REVIEW

Today, we are diving into a cult classic mystery thriller – Brick (2005), directed by Rian Johnson, who later went on to make Looper, Knives Out, and even a Star Wars film.

This was Johnson’s directorial debut, and it’s unlike any other high school movie you’ve seen. It’s dark, gritty, full of suspense, and written in the style of old detective stories from authors like Dashiell Hammett.

The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a teenager who acts more like a private detective, solving a murder mystery inside his own high school. But the twist is – the entire noir-style investigation, with gangsters, femme fatales, and betrayals, is set in an ordinary California suburb among teenagers.

So let’s get into the story of Brick – explained in detail.

Our main character is Brendan Frye, a quiet, smart but lonely high school student. One day, Brendan finds a note in his locker directing him to a payphone. When he answers the call, it’s his ex-girlfriend Emily Kostich on the other side.

Emily sounds frightened and desperate. She begs Brendan for help, saying a few strange words before hanging up: “a bad brick… the Pin… Tug.”

Brendan doesn’t understand what these mean, but he knows Emily is in trouble. He also notices that Emily seems terrified of a black Ford Mustang that passes by. Someone inside flicks out a very distinct cigarette – a detail that sticks in Brendan’s mind.

When Brendan can’t track Emily down, he turns to his smart friend Brian, who helps him gather information.

During his search, Brendan bumps into another ex-girlfriend, Kara, who points him toward a rich, flirty girl named Laura Dannon. Laura is always surrounded by popular students, including her boyfriend Brad Bramish, a football player and known drug user.

At one of Laura’s parties, Brendan learns that Emily has been hanging around with a guy named Dode, a junkie who also happens to be her new boyfriend. Dode arranges a meeting between Brendan and Emily.

But when Brendan finally meets her, Emily brushes him off. She claims the earlier call was a mistake and insists he should leave her alone.

Brendan refuses to give up. He steals Emily’s notepad and finds a clue inside. Following the clue, Brendan discovers Emily’s dead body in a drainage tunnel the very next morning.

This is the turning point of the story. Brendan hides Emily’s body so that police won’t get involved, and he vows to find out who killed her.

Brendan begins piecing together the puzzle. He learns that the word “Brick” Emily mentioned actually refers to a block of heroin, compressed to the size and shape of a brick.

Soon he hears about the Pin, a mysterious local drug baron who controls the heroin trade. To get closer to the Pin, Brendan deliberately picks a fight with Brad in hopes of attracting attention.

Instead, Brendan is attacked by a man in a beanie hat – later revealed to be Tug, the Pin’s violent right-hand man. Brendan refuses to fight back and demands to meet the Pin.

Eventually, Tug takes Brendan to the Pin’s house.

The Pin, played with quiet menace, is a strange figure. He is older than the high school kids, walks with a cane, and lives with his mother.

Brendan pretends to want to work for him. The Pin doesn’t give him an answer immediately but says he’ll either hire him… or hurt him. Brendan will find out the next day.

Later, Laura drives Brendan back home. She explains that Emily had stolen a brick of heroin after being rejected by the Pin’s operation. Laura offers to help Brendan, but he doesn’t trust her.

The next day, Brendan finds out the Pin has indeed hired him. But at the same time, Dode, Emily’s junkie boyfriend, threatens Brendan. Dode saw Brendan hide Emily’s body and thinks Brendan killed her.

Brendan learns more about the heroin business. The Pin had bought ten bricks of heroin:

·        Eight were sold quickly.

·        The ninth brick was stolen and later returned, but it had been contaminated.

·        The tenth brick was still waiting to be sold.

This is the “bad brick” Emily mentioned.

Tug, meanwhile, confides in Brendan. He reveals that he was also romantically involved with Emily. This makes him a potential suspect in her death.

Later, Brendan intercepts Dode, who reveals a shocking detail – Emily was pregnant when she died. Dode believes he was the father.

At a meeting between Dode, Tug, and the Pin, things spiral out of control. Dode demands money to reveal Emily’s killer. But before he can say anything, Tug shoots Dode in the head in a fit of rage.

Brendan faints from exhaustion and injuries, and when he wakes up, he finds himself in Tug’s bedroom. Tug tells Brendan that a war is brewing between him and the Pin.

In this chaos, Brendan begins to notice more red flags around Laura. When he kisses her, he recognizes her cigarette as the same brand thrown from the black Mustang during Emily’s call. Laura is more involved than she seems.

Brendan arranges a big meeting between Tug and the Pin. But when everyone gathers, things fall apart.

It is revealed that the tenth brick of heroin is missing. Suspicion spreads, and violence erupts. Tug snaps and brutally kills the Pin. Brendan manages to escape just as the police arrive.

But before leaving, he makes sure Emily’s body is hidden in Tug’s car trunk, ensuring the police blame Tug for her murder.

The next day at school, Brendan confronts Laura. She tells him that Tug died in a shootout with the police after the meeting.

Brendan accuses her of being the mastermind behind everything. He explains what really happened:

·        Laura had stolen the ninth brick of heroin.

·        To cover her tracks, she set Emily up, making it look like Emily was the thief.

·        She then manipulated Emily into meeting Tug.

·        Emily, desperate and scared, told Tug she was pregnant with his child. Panicked, Tug killed her.

Laura is exposed as the real schemer. Brendan tells her that he has left a note for the school administration, pointing them to the missing brick of heroin – hidden in her locker.

Laura, bitter and defeated, throws one last dagger at Brendan. She reveals that Emily was three months pregnant when she died… and the baby was not Dode’s or Tug’s, but Brendan’s.

This revelation leaves Brendan shattered.

Brick ends on this haunting note. Brendan has solved the mystery, but at a great personal cost. He not only lost Emily but also discovered that she was carrying his child when she died.

The film brilliantly blends the style of old detective noir with a modern high school setting. With sharp dialogue, mysterious characters, and a story full of betrayal, drugs, and love, Brick is a movie that leaves a lasting impact.

No wonder it won the Special Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and went on to become a cult classic.
