Jana Nayagan is a 2026 Indian Tamil-language political action
drama film directed by H. Vinoth and
produced by Venkat K. Narayana under KVN
Productions. The film stars C. Joseph Vijay, Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde,
and Mamitha
Baiju in the lead role alongside Nassar, Prakash Raj, Gautham
Vasudev Menon, Narain, and Priyamani.
The film is a remake of the
2023 Telugu language film Bhagavanth Kesari. The
film follows the story of a former Indian
Police Service officer who raises the daughter of
a deceased friend and encourages her to overcome childhood trauma and pursue a
career in the Indian Army.
His efforts draw him into a confrontation with corrupt individuals, whose
actions threaten democratic institutions.
It marked Vijay's final
film appearance before he entered politics. The film has music composed
by Anirudh
Ravichander, cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan and
editing by Pradeep E. Ragav.
The film was released
worldwide on 23 July 2026, two and half months after Vijay had assumed office
as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The film received mixed
reviews from critics, with praise for Vijay's performance, Anirudh's music and
background score while criticism was aimed at its weak storyline.
The film begins with an
election boycott by voters of a certain village, citing suppression by the
corrupt politicians. To encourage them to vote, Police
Inspector Narayanan narrates the story of
Thalapathy Vetri Kondan. Vetri, a former Indian
Police Service officer, is in jail. After his
release, he becomes a guardian and adopted father to Vijayalakshmi
"Viji", the daughter of his late friend, Srikanth. While Vetri wants
Viji to join the Indian Army, honouring the wishes of her parents, Viji suffers
from several fears, stemming from violent events that took place during her
childhood. With encouragement from Vetri's love interest, psychiatrist Kayal,
Vetri gradually pushes Viji through training.
Viji inadvertently draws
the attention of Amrish Pujari alias John Himmler, a former assistant commissioner of police turned
criminal. Himmler, in alliance with local politician Roja Rangaswamy, runs an
operation to incite violence and destabilise the democratically elected
government. Himmler's interest in Viji brings Vetri into conflict with him,
which is exacerbated by the history between the two men. Vetri, serving as an
honest police officer, is betrayed by Pujari, which leads to Vetri's
imprisonment.
In the present, Himmler
holds the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu hostage, and
mounts a large-scale attack involving robots and attack
drones against the armed forces. Himmler's men
distribute guns, which had been illegally smuggled into the country, and incite
a religious violence. During a public rally, an assassination attempt leaves
Vetri presumed dead, and he uses the misdirection to move against Himmler's
network covertly, infiltrating a secure data facility to gather evidence
connecting Himmler. Vetri hijacks a state broadcast to expose this evidence
publicly, triggering mass protests and Rangaswamy's arrest, while directly
confronting and killing Himmler.
In the aftermath, Vetri
declines mainstream politics, choosing instead to continue working from
outside, while Viji, having completed her training, moves forward in her path
to join the Army.
