THE OLD GUARD 2 - MOVIE REVIEW / UMA THURMAN / CHARLIZE THERON MOVIE

Today we are talking about The Old Guard 2, the big sequel to the 2020 Netflix hit The Old Guard. This 2025 movie is directed by Victoria Mahoney, based on Greg Rucka’s comic books. The screenplay is written by Greg Rucka himself along with Sarah L. Walker.

The film brings back the original cast: Charlize Theron as Andy, KiKi Layne as Nile, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Marwan Kenzari as Joe, Luca Marinelli as Nicky, Veronica Ngô as Quỳnh, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley. Joining them this time are Henry Golding and the legendary Uma Thurman.

The movie was released on July 2, 2025, directly on Netflix. Critics gave it mixed-to-negative reviews, but the film has some big twists, emotional drama, and epic action that fans of the first part will definitely want to see. Let’s dive into the story.

Story Breakdown

The film begins off the coast of Rome. A ship crew pulls up a mysterious iron maiden from the ocean floor. When they open it, shockingly, they find Quỳnh, an immortal who had been trapped inside for nearly 500 years. If you remember from part one, she was thrown into the sea centuries ago, forced to endlessly drown and revive. Now, she is finally back in the world.

Meanwhile, it has been six months since Booker was punished by Andy and the team, sentenced to loneliness for betraying them in the past. Andy continues to lead Nile, Joe, Nicky, and Copley on dangerous missions. In one scene, they retrieve a secret weapons cache from a heavily guarded compound in Split.

But Nile starts to have strange dreams. In one vision, she sees a mysterious woman inside a library, incapacitating someone before stealing their books. This dream becomes important later in the story.

🕵️ Qunh Returns

In Paris, Booker is suddenly kidnapped by none other than Quỳnh. She has survived her centuries of torment, and now she has her own agenda.

Andy and Copley, while searching for answers, track down an old immortal named Tuah in Seoul. Tuah is extremely wise and knows a lot about immortal history. He reveals that he once tried to save Quỳnh when she was locked in the iron maiden 500 years ago. Tuah also explains that his ancient books about immortals were stolen long ago by someone called Discord. Over the centuries, Discord has turned into a very powerful and elusive arms dealer.

Andy then receives a message from Quỳnh, delivered through Booker, demanding that Andy meet her in Rome—at the very spot where Quỳnh was cast into the sea. Andy goes, and the two women have a very tense reunion. Quỳnh is angry. She blames Andy for never rescuing her and breaking her promise. The two even fight briefly, and Quỳnh takes back her necklace before disappearing.

🌌 Theories About Immortality

Back with Nile, things get even stranger. She learns that Discord may actually be the very first immortal, and Nile herself might be the last one ever born. The proof is in their identical birthmarks.

Tuah then explains a shocking theory:

1.   The last immortal has the power to take away another immortal’s powers whenever they injure them.

2.   If an immortal loses their powers, they can get them back only if another immortal transfers it to them willingly.

This theory quickly becomes real when Nile accidentally scratches Booker’s arm. His wounds no longer heal, meaning his immortality is gone. Booker insists that Andy should never find out about this.

💣 The Nuclear Facility Mission

Soon, Andy and Copley discover that Quỳnh and Discord have taken control of a Chinese-owned nuclear facility in South Tangerang. They have planted explosives inside the reactor core, which could irradiate the area and kill millions. Even though they know it’s a trap, Andy, Nile, Booker, and the team head in to stop them.

Inside the facility, things get messy. Most of the team is captured, leaving only Andy, Booker, and Nile free. During the battle, Booker—now mortal—decides to sacrifice himself. He transfers his immortal power back to Andy, restoring her abilities, but dies in the process. Andy is heartbroken at losing him again.

Meanwhile, Nile confronts Quỳnh inside the reactor core. Nile injures Quỳnh badly, and just as Tuah’s theory suggested, Quỳnh loses her immortality. But before Nile can escape, she is captured by Discord.

The Final Battle

Andy convinces Quỳnh, now mortal, to hand over the detonator and prevent disaster. Andy then faces Discord in a brutal fight. Here comes another shocking reveal—Discord has also lost her immortality. That’s why she wants Nile so badly: she plans to use her to regain eternal life.

Discord stabs Andy in the heart, leaving her briefly incapacitated, and manages to escape with the captured team members. Before fleeing, she declares: “Next time we meet, I will be immortal again.”

🎭 Ending

After everything, Andy and Quỳnh reconcile and return to Tuah’s library. Andy, now determined and stronger than ever, makes a vow: she will hunt down Discord and rescue her captured teammates—no matter what it takes.

And that’s how The Old Guard 2 ends, clearly setting up room for another sequel in the future.

Final Thoughts (for YouTube review style)

·        The movie has exciting ideas about immortality, sacrifice, and revenge.

·        Action scenes are intense, though critics felt the film was uneven compared to the first part.

·        The emotional moments—like Booker’s sacrifice—hit hard, while the mystery of Discord adds a fresh twist.

Overall, The Old Guard 2 is not perfect, but it is still an entertaining ride for fans of action, fantasy, and superhero-style storytelling.
