The journey of Vidya Balan to
her breakthrough role in Parineeta was anything but easy. Today, she is
celebrated as one of the finest actresses in Indian cinema, but back then, she
had to struggle through 75 auditions before finally bagging the iconic
role in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s production.
What many don’t know is that Vidya
wasn’t the first choice for the part. Vidhu Vinod Chopra himself revealed that
when the project was conceived, he initially thought of Aishwarya Rai
Bachchan for the lead role. “When we thought of Parineeta, I
immediately imagined a face like Aishwarya Rai. The character is someone with
whom two men fall in love… so the heroine had to be bigger,” Chopra admitted.
But destiny had other plans.
Composer Shantanu Moitra
recalled those days, saying Vidya was tested nearly 75 times and rejected each
time. “Can you imagine her self-worth? Many top actresses were auditioning for
the same role, but Vidya didn’t give up. Even after rejection after rejection,
she kept coming back,” he said.
Director Pradeep Sarkar,
however, wasn’t ready to let her go. After repeated trials, he decided to give
Vidya one last chance—with a new look. Vidya, already exhausted by constant
rejection, went for the audition just before attending a Bryan Adams concert
in Mumbai. She gave her test without much expectation and left for the show.
And then, her life changed. During
the concert, Vidya received a call from Sarkar. Initially, she thought it was
yet another rejection and even considered ignoring it. But then came a message:
“It’s over—you are Parineeta.” Overwhelmed, Vidya stepped out of the
concert, broke down in tears, and kneeled on the ground, crying with joy.
That one call transformed her life.
From being rejected dozens of times to becoming the face of Parineeta,
Vidya Balan’s journey is a story of resilience, patience, and belief in
oneself. After the film’s success, she didn’t just emerge as an actress—she
became a symbol of perseverance in Bollywood.
