The Fall Guy is a 2024 American action comedy film directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce, very loosely based on the 1980s TV series. The plot follows a stuntman (Ryan Gosling) working on his ex-girlfriend's (Emily Blunt) directorial debut action film, only to find himself involved in a conspiracy surrounding the film's lead actor (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). The cast also features Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, and Winston Duke.

The Fall Guy premiered at SXSW on March 12, 2024, and was released in the United States on May 3 by Universal Pictures. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, but underperformed at the box office.

The Fall Guy opens with Colt Seavers, a seasoned Hollywood stunt performer working as a stunt double for the famous action star Tom Ryder. Colt’s career takes a tragic turn when a stunt goes wrong, leaving him with a severe back injury. As a result, Colt is forced to abandon not only his career but also his relationship with his girlfriend, Jody Moreno, who was a camerawoman on the film set. After the accident, Colt disappears from the industry and is left feeling defeated, with his dreams shattered.

Fast forward eighteen months, and we find Colt working as a valet at a small Mexican restaurant. Life has moved on, but Colt's heart remains tied to the world of stunts and cinema. However, his quiet life is disrupted when Gail Meyer, a film producer, contacts him with surprising news. Tom Ryder is starring in a new space opera film titled Metalstorm, and Jody, now a director, is leading the production. Gail tells Colt that Jody wants him back on set in Sydney, Australia. With hopes of rekindling his career and relationship, Colt heads to Sydney to join the production.

Once Colt arrives on set, things take a quick turn. He learns that Jody didn’t actually ask for him and is still harboring resentment over their breakup. To make matters worse, Metalstorm, the movie they’re filming, seems like a thinly veiled jab at Colt, with Jody using the film to work through her anger about their relationship. However, the real trouble starts when Gail reveals that Tom Ryder has mysteriously disappeared. Apparently, he’s gotten involved with some “very bad people,” and his absence threatens to halt the production, which is already massively over budget.

Colt, not wanting to see Jody’s directorial debut fall apart, takes it upon himself to track down Tom before it’s too late. His journey to find Tom begins with a visit to Tom’s apartment, where he meets Iggy, Tom's girlfriend and co-star. Iggy gives him a lead that takes him to a nightclub. However, things go sideways when Colt is tricked into drinking a hallucinogenic cocktail by a shady drug dealer named Doone. After a wild confrontation with Doone’s henchmen, Colt continues his investigation and heads to Tom’s hotel room. There, he makes a horrifying discovery—a dead body in a bathtub full of ice. But when he returns with the police, the body is gone, leaving Colt with more questions than answers.

As filming for Metalstorm continues, Colt and Jody slowly start to rekindle their relationship. However, before things can fully develop, Gail interrupts with urgent news—Colt must return to the United States immediately. Instead of leaving, Colt continues his search for Tom, eventually tracking down his personal assistant, Alma Milan. Alma hands Colt Tom’s phone, a key piece of evidence that both Tom and Gail have been searching for. Before Colt can fully examine the phone, they are attacked by Tom’s head of security, Dressler, and his team. After an adrenaline-pumping chase through Sydney involving a garbage truck, Colt and Alma manage to fend off the attackers.

Colt teams up with his longtime friend Dan Tucker, the stunt coordinator on Metalstorm, to unlock Tom’s phone. They discover a shocking video of Tom, intoxicated, accidentally killing his stunt double, Henry Herrera, during a sparring match at a party. The dead man in the bathtub was none other than Henry. But before Colt can do anything with the evidence, they are attacked again, and the phone is destroyed in the chaos.

Colt is captured and finally comes face-to-face with Tom, who has been hiding out on a yacht on Gail’s orders. Tom reveals a shocking truth—Gail is framing Colt for the murder of Henry using deepfake technology to swap Colt’s face with Tom’s in the incriminating video. Even worse, Tom admits that he orchestrated Colt’s accident all those months ago because he felt overshadowed by his stunt double. Now, with Henry’s body discovered and the doctored video making headlines, Colt finds himself framed for a crime he didn’t commit.

However, Colt escapes, though he’s presumed dead after a dramatic boat chase. Determined to clear his name, Colt returns to the Metalstorm set in secret and convinces Jody of his innocence. Together, they hatch a plan to trick Tom into confessing his crimes while he’s unknowingly being recorded during a stunt sequence. With Dan and the rest of the crew holding off Tom’s goons, Colt retrieves the evidence.

In the film’s climactic finale, Gail steals the recording and tries to escape in a helicopter with Tom. But Colt, with Jody’s help, leaps onto the helicopter mid-air, retrieves the recording, and falls onto a crash mat as the helicopter crashes with Gail and Tom inside.

With the truth finally exposed, Metalstorm moves forward, and its trailer premieres at San Diego Comic-Con with Jason Momoa taking over as the lead actor and Alma becoming the film’s new producer. The movie goes on to become a massive box office hit. Colt is exonerated, and he and Jody rekindle their relationship, getting back together after all the chaos.

In a hilarious post-credits scene, Gail is arrested, while Tom, in an attempt to call his agent, accidentally triggers a series of pyrotechnics and blows himself up.
