Movie Review

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an American computer-animated adventure film from 2023 that is based on Nintendo's Mario video game series. Matthew Fogel wrote it, and Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic were in charge of the direction. The ensemble cast includes voice actors Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen. The movie tells the origin story of the Italian-American plumber brothers Mario and Luigi, who are transported to another realm and get involved in a conflict between the Koopas, led by Browser, and the Mushroom Kingdom, led by Princess Peach.

In April 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released. Critics gave the movie a mixed bag of reviews, but viewers gave it a more favorable response. It broke numerous box office records, including the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated picture and the highest-earning movie based on a video game. It was the fourth-highest-grossing movie of 2023.

Mario and Luigi, two Italian-American brothers, recently opened a plumbing company in Brooklyn. Mario's father thinks Luigi is going down with him and disapproves of his decision to quit his steady employment working with his nasty ex-employer Spike. Mario and Luigi head underground to address a huge manhole leak they saw on the news, but they get separated when they get dragged through a Warp Pipe.

Luigi lands in the Dark Lands, controlled by the wicked Koopa king Browser, while Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom, ruled by Princess Peach. When Peach rejects his proposal of marriage, Bowser threatens to deploy a Super Star to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom. In order to threaten Mario, whom he views as a rival for Peach's affection, he locks Luigi up. Toad introduces Mario to Peach when they first meet. As she joins forces with the ape Kongs to battle Bowser, Peach decides to take Mario and Toad with her. If Mario beats Donkey Kong in a duel, King Cranky Kong of the Jungle Kingdom offers to help. Donkey Kong is powerful, but Mario beats him with a catsuit.

On an attempt to return to the Mushroom Kingdom on karts, Mario, Peach, Toad, and the Kongs are ambushed by Bowser's army on Rainbow Road. Mario and Donkey Kong fall into the ocean and are eaten by an eel-like Maw-Ray while the other Kongs are kidnapped as a Koopa General ruins a portion of the road. Returning to the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach, and Toad urge the populace to leave. After Toad is tortured by Bowser's advisor Kamek, Peach is grudgingly asked to marry him when Bowser comes on his flying castle. After discussing how their different fathers never take their decisions seriously, Mario and Donkey Kong escape the Maw-Ray on a rocket from Donkey Kong's kart and hasten to Bowser and Peach's wedding.

In honor of Peach, Bowser intends to drown all of his hostages in the lava at the wedding banquet. In order to freeze Bowser, Peach utilizes an Ice Flower that Toad smuggled into her bouquet. Arriving with Donkey Kong, Mario uses a Tanooki suit to help Luigi before freeing the inmates. Bowser, now free and furious, summons a Banzai Bill to annihilate the Mushroom Kingdom, but Mario diverts it into the Warp Pipe, where it explodes, creating a vacuum that moves Bowser's castle to Brooklyn.

Mario and Luigi acquire the Super Star, turn invincible, and vanquish the Koopas as they battle Bowser. Bowser is contained in a jar after being miniaturized by a Mini Mushroom. Brooklyn residents laud Mario and Luigi as heroes and celebrate them, including their parents and Spike. Mario and Luigi move to a new house in the Mushroom Kingdom after the battle. A Yoshi egg hatches in the pipeline tunnel under Brooklyn in a post-credits sequence.
