“Social media has an unusual new darling:
Gypsy Rose Blanchard”
The case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard is a harrowing true-crime
story that shocked the nation, blurring the lines between victim and
perpetrator. It is a defining case of Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another,
previously known as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP).
Here is the detailed story of the abuse, the investigation,
the verdict, and the aftermath.
1. The Deception: Life Under Dee Dee Blanchard:
For over two decades, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard
convinced friends, family, doctors, and charitable organizations that her
daughter, Gypsy Rose, was suffering from a litany of catastrophic illnesses.
The Fabricated Diagnoses:
Dee Dee claimed Gypsy suffered from:
• Muscular
Dystrophy (requiring a wheelchair).
• Leukemia.
• Severe epilepsy.
• Asthma and sleep
apnea (requiring an oxygen tank and feeding tube).
• Chromosomal
defects causing the mental capacity of a 7-year-old.
The Reality:
In reality, Gypsy was perfectly healthy. She could walk, eat
regular food and was of normal intelligence. Dee Dee achieved this deception
by:
• Medical Child
Abuse: Forcing Gypsy to undergo unnecessary surgeries (including removal of
salivary glands and eye surgeries) and take medications that caused her teeth
to decay and fall out.
• Isolation:
Controlling all communication, rarely letting Gypsy out of her sight, and
intercepting mail from Gypsy’s father, Rod Blanchard.
• Manipulation:
Using Gypsy’s appearance (shaving her head, using a wheelchair) to solicit
donations, free trips to Disney World, and a custom house from Habitat for
Humanity.
2. The Plot for Escape:
As Gypsy reached adulthood, she began to realize she was not
as sick as her mother claimed. She began secretly accessing the internet,
sneaking onto a Christian dating site in 2012. There, she met Nicholas
Godejohn.
Gypsy told Godejohn the truth about her abuse and her mother’s control. Convinced that the only way to be together was to eliminate Dee Dee, the pair plotted the murder for over a year. Gypsy provided Godejohn with money to travel from Wisconsin to her home in Springfield, Missouri.
3. Investigation and Arrest:
The case broke wide open on June 14, 2015.
The Discovery:
Friends of Dee Dee saw a disturbing post on her Facebook
account: "That bitch is dead!"
Fearing the worst, they contacted the police. When sheriff's
deputies arrived at the Blanchard home, they found Dee Dee face down in her
bed, stabbed to death.
The Findings:
The scene was confusing. Gypsy was missing, along with her
wheelchair, medications, and oxygen tank. Neighbors and friends were frantic,
believing Gypsy had been kidnapped and would die without her equipment.
However, investigators soon found messages between Gypsy and
Godejohn on Dee Dee's computer, revealing the plot.
The Arrest:
The next day, June 15, 2015, police tracked Gypsy and Godejohn
to a motel in Big Bend, Wisconsin.
• When Gypsy walked
out of the motel room without a wheelchair or oxygen tank, the community was
stunned.
• Gypsy confessed
to plotting the murder, stating she did it to escape a lifetime of abuse.
• Godejohn
confessed to stabbing Dee Dee while Gypsy hid in the bathroom.
4. Verdicts and Sentencing:
Because of the documented extreme abuse, the case resulted in
highly unusual legal outcomes.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard
• Charge:
First-degree murder.
• Plea Deal: Due to
the mitigating circumstances of extreme psychological and physical abuse,
prosecutors offered a plea deal.
• Verdict: Gypsy
pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
• Sentence: 10
years in prison (the minimum sentence for the charge).
Nicholas Godejohn
• Charge:
First-degree murder.
• Verdict: Found
guilty by a jury.
• Sentence: Life
imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
5. Aftermath:
The case sparked national conversation about medical child
abuse and the failure of the medical system to detect MSBP.
Prison Life
Gypsy served her time at the Chillicothe Correctional Center
in Missouri. During her incarceration, she earned her GED, took classes, and
became a figure of public interest, featured in the HBO documentary Mommy Dead
and Dearest. While in prison, she married Ryan Anderson in a private ceremony
in July 2022.
Release and New Fame:
On December 28, 2023, Gypsy was released on parole after
serving roughly 85% of her sentence.
• Upon release, she
gained massive social media followings on TikTok and Instagram.
• She released an
e-book and starred in a docuseries titled The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose
Blanchard.
• In March 2024,
Gypsy announced her separation from Ryan Anderson and subsequently began a
relationship with a former fiancé, Ken Urker.
