"WILDWOOD" - MOVIE REVIEW / STOP-MOTION ANIMATED DARK FANTASY FILM

*Wildwood* is an upcoming stop-motion animated dark fantasy film produced by Laika. Directed by Travis Knight and written by Chris Butler, the film is based on Colin Meloy's 2011 novel of the same name, illustrated by Carson Ellis. With an ensemble voice cast featuring Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, and others, *Wildwood* promises to be a visually stunning and emotionally rich addition to Laika's portfolio. The film, set for release in 2025, follows two children as they venture into a magical forest to rescue a kidnapped infant, encountering a world filled with wonder, danger, and mystery.

The film opens in Portland, Oregon, where Prue McKeel, (voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a resourceful and curious 12-year-old, lives a relatively ordinary life. Prue is responsible for looking after her baby brother, Mac, while their parents are busy with work. One day, while playing in the park, a murder of crows swoops down and kidnaps Mac, spiriting him away into the Impassable Wilderness, a dense and mysterious forest on the edge of the city. Prue, desperate to save her brother, enlists the help of her classmate Curtis Mehlberg, (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), a shy but loyal boy who harbors a secret crush on her.

Prue and Curtis venture into the Impassable Wilderness, a place shrouded in myth and forbidden to outsiders. They soon discover that the forest is a hidden realm teeming with magical creatures, sentient animals, and warring factions. The duo learns that the crows are under the command of Alexandra, (voiced by Carey Mulligan), a enigmatic and powerful woman who rules over the forest with an iron fist. Alexandra has taken Mac for reasons unknown, and Prue and Curtis must navigate the treacherous landscape to rescue him.

As they journey deeper into the forest, Prue and Curtis encounter a host of memorable characters, including:

The Bandits. A group of outlaw coyotes led by the charismatic but dangerous Brendan, (voiced by Jake Johnson).

The Avian Principality. A society of birds led by the wise and regal Owl Rex, (voiced by Mahershala Ali).

The Mystics. A coven of witches, including the eccentric and unpredictable Martha, (voiced by Awkwafina) and the stern but kind-hearted Agnes, (voiced by Angela Bassett).

Prue and Curtis face numerous challenges as they navigate the forest's dangers. They must outwit the Bandits, earn the trust of the Avian Principality, and seek guidance from the Mystics. Along the way, they uncover the truth about Alexandra's motives: she seeks to harness Mac's latent magical abilities to maintain her control over the forest. Prue and Curtis also learn about the forest's history, including a long-standing conflict between its inhabitants and the outside world.

The duo's friendship is tested as they grapple with their fears and insecurities. Curtis, who has always felt overshadowed by Prue's confidence, finds his own courage and resourcefulness. Prue, in turn, learns to rely on others and confront her own vulnerabilities.

The film builds to a climactic showdown at Alexandra's fortress, where Prue and Curtis must rescue Mac and thwart her plans. With the help of their newfound allies, including Brendan, Owl Rex, and the Mystics, they launch a daring assault. The battle is intense and visually spectacular, with stop-motion animation bringing the forest's magical creatures and landscapes to life.

In the end, Prue and Curtis succeed in rescuing Mac and defeating Alexandra. However, the victory comes at a cost, as the forest's delicate balance is disrupted. Prue and Curtis must make a difficult decision: return to their ordinary lives or stay in the forest to help rebuild and protect it.
