"BIT" - MOVIE REVIEW / ITS A FUN, STYLISH, AND THOUGHT PROVOKING FILM
*Bit* is
a fresh, stylish, and campy take on the vampire genre, blending queer themes,
feminist undertones, and a coming-of-age story into a fun and visually striking
film. Directed by Brad Michael Elmore, the movie follows Laurel, a young
transgender woman from Oregon, who moves to Los Angeles for the summer and
stumbles into a group of feminist vampires led by the charismatic Duke. After
being turned into a vampire, Laurel must navigate her new identity while
grappling with the moral complexities of her newfound power.
The film
shines in its aesthetic and tone, with vibrant visuals and a moody atmosphere
that perfectly complement its dark yet playful narrative. The soundtrack,
including a memorable exposition scene set to the tune of *Rasputin*, adds to
the film's charm. While the story is relatively simple, it effectively explores
themes of power, identity, and morality without becoming overly preachy. The
queer and feminist elements are woven naturally into the plot, with Laurel’s
transgender identity being a subtle yet integral part of her character rather
than the central focus.
The
performances are solid, with Nicole Maines delivering a compelling portrayal of
Laurel, and Diana Hopper stealing scenes as the fierce and enigmatic Duke.
However, the supporting cast, while charismatic, feels underdeveloped, leaving
viewers wanting more backstory for the other members of the vampire group.
The
film’s dialogue and pacing occasionally falter, with some scenes feeling uneven
or underpolished. While the first act risks leaning too heavily into an
anti-male tone, the narrative eventually finds its balance, offering a more
nuanced exploration of gender dynamics and power. The humor, though
hit-or-miss, adds to the film’s campy appeal.
*Bit* is
not without its flaws, but it succeeds as an entertaining and inclusive take on
the vampire genre. It’s a film that speaks to a younger, more diverse audience,
embracing modern values and representation without feeling forced. While it may
not reach its full potential, it’s a refreshing and enjoyable watch, especially
for fans of queer cinema and vampire lore.
My Rating
is 6.5/10.
*Bit* is
a fun, stylish, and thought-provoking film that, despite its imperfections,
offers a unique and inclusive twist on the vampire genre. It’s worth a watch
for its creativity, strong performances, and bold representation.
