"ANOTHER END" - ITALIAN MOVIE REVIEW

Another End, is a 2024 science fiction romance film written and directed by Piero Messina. It made its debut at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 18, 2024, before premiering in theaters across Italy on March 21, 2024.

The film explores grief, love, and the ethics of technology through a unique premise. The story revolves around Sal, a man devastated after losing his soulmate, Zoe, in a tragic car accident. Overwhelmed by guilt and sorrow, Sal struggles to move on, blaming himself for the accident since he was the one driving. His sister, Ebe, becomes deeply concerned about his deteriorating mental state and looks for a way to help him heal.

Ebe works at Aeternum, a company that offers an unconventional solution for grieving individuals. Using groundbreaking technology called "Another End," Aeternum allows the bereaved to reconnect with their lost loved ones in an extraordinary way. The memories and consciousness of the deceased are stored in the company’s database and then transferred into a compatible host body. This process allows family members to interact with their departed loved ones for a set number of sessions, offering them a chance at closure. However, there is a limitation—the host forgets everything each time they sleep, and the process cannot continue indefinitely.

Initially, Sal and Zoe’s parents reject the idea, unwilling to engage with what seems like an artificial form of reconnection. However, Sal’s grief worsens, leading him to a suicide attempt through a combination of alcohol and pills. Fortunately, Ebe finds him in time and prevents the worst from happening. Desperate to help him find peace, she persuades Zoe’s mother to approve the process. A therapist working with Aeternum also convinces Sal to give the method a chance, though he remains uncertain about whether he will truly feel connected to Zoe in another person’s body.

When the procedure begins, Zoe's consciousness is transferred into Ava, a woman serving as the host. At first, Sal struggles to recognize her, but when he follows the therapist’s advice and provokes an argument, he suddenly sees Zoe in Ava. Despite the physical differences, their emotional connection reignites, and he falls in love with her all over again. Their interactions bring him happiness for the first time since the accident, and he becomes unwilling to let go. He convinces Ebe to extend their sessions, despite the professional risk it poses for her.

As the process nears its inevitable conclusion, Sal refuses to say goodbye again. He secretly follows Ava to her workplace, discovering that she works at a strip club. Determined to maintain their connection, he meets her outside the program and gets to know her as an individual, learning that she, too, has suffered loss—she once had a child but lost them. Hosting allows her to escape the pain of her own reality.

However, their repeated sessions lead to unexpected consequences. Ava begins to retain small fragments of Zoe’s memories, something that should have been impossible. When she finally uncovers Sal’s true identity and realizes that she has been unknowingly playing a role in his past, she pulls away, distancing herself from him. This sends Sal into another downward spiral of despair.

Just when it seems like all hope is lost, Ebe informs him that Ava has reached out and wants to meet him again. This final revelation leaves the audience wondering whether their connection is real or simply the result of an experiment gone too far.

Another End is a thought-provoking film that explores grief, identity, and the ethics of human memory, making it an emotionally resonant and philosophical experience.
