"BROTHER" - Movie Review / A Tale of Transformation, Relationships, and Redemption.
Brother is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language comedy-drama film written and directed by M Rajesh. Produced by Sundar Arumugam under the banner of Screen Scene Media Entertainment Pvt Ltd., the film stars Jayam Ravi and Priyanka Mohan in the lead roles. This much-anticipated film was officially announced in August 2022 under the working title JR 30. Its official title, Brother, was revealed in September 2023.
Filming began in August 2022 and was primarily shot in Chennai, with production wrapping up by early 2024. The film features music composed by Harris Jayaraj, cinematography by Vivekanand Santhosham, and editing by Ashish Joseph. Released worldwide on October 31, 2024, coinciding with Diwali, Brother garnered mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. While Jayam Ravi's and Priyanka Mohan's performances, as well as Harris Jayaraj's musical score, were praised, the film faced criticism for its writing and screenplay. It performed moderately at the box office.
The film centers on Karthik, played by Jayam Ravi, a law school dropout and the mischievous son of Kumarasamy and Saraswathi. His strong sense of justice often gets him into trouble, causing tension within his family. After a confrontation with his neighbors about the poor condition of their apartment, Karthik inadvertently worsens his father’s high blood pressure. Concerned about his behavior, Karthik’s elder sister, Anandhi, decides to take him to her in-laws' disciplined household in Ooty, hoping that the change in environment will reform him.
Karthik’s misadventures continue in Ooty. Anandhi’s sister-in-law, Archana, (Priyanka Mohan), secures him a job as a hospital bouncer, but Karthik is fired after standing up to a patient’s relative who exploits an elderly man’s wealth. Subsequently, Anandhi finds him another job as a physical education teacher at her school, but Karthik’s argumentative nature leads to a clash with a math teacher, resulting in yet another dismissal.
Despite Karthik’s positive intervention, tensions in the household escalate. Sivagurunathan and his family demand Karthik’s removal, but Anandhi pleads with them to let him stay. When the conflict peaks, Sivagurunathan and his wife humiliate Anandhi and Karthik, prompting them to leave the house. Back home, Kumarasamy and Saraswathi blame Karthik for disrupting Anandhi’s life. In a heated moment, Kumarasamy reveals that Karthik is adopted and conditions his acceptance on reconciling Anandhi with her in-laws.
Determined to make amends, Karthik approaches Sivagurunathan’s family for forgiveness, only to face humiliation again. Sivagurunathan even dismisses Keshav from his household to emphasize the consequences of Karthik’s actions. Meanwhile, Archana begins to see Karthik in a new light, recognizing his efforts to change. As Karthik strives to prove his worth, a school event becomes a turning point. Aravind, Anandhi’s husband, reconciles with her, moved by their children’s emotions. However, Sivagurunathan remains rigid, forcing Aravind and his family to move into Karthik’s home.
In an unexpected twist, Hemamalini, Sivagurunathan’s wife, joins Karthik, urging her husband to forgive. Archana also takes a bold step, proposing to marry Karthik to resolve tensions. However, Sivagurunathan publicly ridicules her proposal. Doctor Vinay, who harbors unreciprocated feelings for Archana, attempts to capitalize on the situation by offering marriage, aligning with Sivagurunathan’s ambitions for a promotion to the Prime Minister’s Office in Delhi.
Karthik’s persistent efforts pay off when a video narrating his contributions to the Pannaikadu village surfaces during a press conference. The footage highlights Sivagurunathan’s achievements, prompting tough questions that lead him to relinquish his aspirations for a promotion. Dr. Vinay abandons Sivagurunathan upon learning of his resignation, and Karthik steps in to support his estranged father-in-law.
When thugs assault Sivagurunathan, Karthik comes to his rescue, finally earning his acceptance. Sivagurunathan undergoes a transformation, acknowledging Karthik’s sincerity and agreeing to his marriage with Archana. The film concludes on a heartwarming note, with Sivagurunathan shedding his superiority complex and reconciling with Anandhi, while Kumarasamy and Saraswathi celebrate Karthik’s growth.
At the wedding, a surprising revelation emerges: Keshav orchestrated Sivagurunathan’s kidnapping to teach him a lesson. In a symbolic gesture of forgiveness, Sivagurunathan pardons Keshav, reinforcing the film’s themes of reconciliation and familial bonds.
Brother is a heartfelt exploration of relationships, personal growth, and the power of redemption. Jayam Ravi delivers a nuanced performance as Karthik, balancing humor and emotion, while Priyanka Mohan shines as the supportive yet resilient Archana. Though the film faced criticism for its inconsistent writing and pacing, it resonates with audiences for its relatable characters and Harris Jayaraj’s captivating score.
With its mix of comedy, drama, and poignant storytelling, Brother remains a celebration of family values and the transformative power of love and forgiveness.
