“Peter Pan & Wendy”
Movie Review
The director of the
2023 American fantasy adventure film Peter Pan & Wendy is David Lowery, who
also co-wrote the script with Toby Halbrooks. The movie is a live-action
adaptation of Walt Disney's 1953 animated classic Peter Pan, which was based on
J. M. Barrie's 1904 play Peter Pam: or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, also
known as Peter and Wendy. The titular characters in the film are played by Ever
Anderson and Alexander Hyperlink. The plot revolves around Peter Pan and Wendy
as they go to the enchanted world of Neverland with Wendy's siblings and
Peter's best friend Tinker Bell. Wendy encounters Peter's antagonist, Captain
Hook, and embarks on a trip that will change her life. Critics gave Peter Pan
& Wendy mainly favorable reviews after its April 2023 premiere.
Wendy Darling spends
her last night at home in Edwardian London with her parents, George and Mary,
and her two younger brothers, John and Michael, before departing for boarding
school the following day. Wendy grouses to her mother about not wanting to age
once she departs. Later that evening, Peter Pan appears in the Darlings'
nursery. After learning about Wendy's desire, he states that he has come to
take her to Neverland so she will never have to grow up. Peter's friend and
companion, the fairy Tinker Bell, helps Wendy, John, and Michael board a plane
for Neverland.
When they arrive, a pirate ship commanded by Captain Hook attacks them because he wants to get revenge on Peter for amputating and throwing a crocodile's right hand, which caused him to lose his hand. Wendy is separated from Peter and her boys as they fall from the sky as a consequence of a cannon blast fired by Hook and Mr. Hyperlink, Hook's first mate. The Lost Boys and Tiger Lily are then encountered by her, and she also witnesses John and Michael being kidnapped by pirates. Hook and his men take them to Skull Boulder and chain them to a boulder so they will drown in the approaching tide. Peter fights the Captain as Wendy, Tiger Lily, and the Lost Boys rescue John and Michael. Hook and the pirates are finally chased away by Tick Tock, the crocodile. While Wendy reprimands Peter for being irresponsible and the Lost Boys inform Wendy of Peter's terrible background with Captain Hook, Peter is delighted with himself for winning.
As the Lost Boys make their way to Peter's cave,
Wendy unwittingly gives the pirates their location by singing a lullaby to
them. Wendy learns from Peter that Captain Hook was James before he left
Neverland and turned into a pirate. Hook's crew catches the Lost Boys and the
Darling kids as the Captain tackles Peter and appears to make him fall to his
seeming death. Hook reveals to Wendy that he left Neverland in order to find
his mother because he missed her. After becoming lost at sea, Smee and the pirates
ultimately discovered him and raised him. When he returned to Neverland, Peter
and Wendy were at odds because Peter did not realize how much Wendy had
changed.
Hook has Wendy walk the plank, but she is able to
escape in time thanks to Tinker Bell's pixie dust and the contented desire to
mature as Tiger Lily locates and cures Peter. Tinker Bell sprinkles pixie dust
on the ship, which causes it to be hoisted into the air and enables the Lost
Boys to flee and fight the pirates. Peter finally apologises to Hook for being
a bad friend when he arrives to meet Hook after a lengthy argument. As Wendy
turns the ship on its side and the pirates fall overboard, Peter implores Hook
to fly in an effort to save him. Hook, however, loses his ability to fly and
plunges into the ocean. The Lost Boys decide that they all need a real home and
board Wendy, John, and Michael's ship to head back to London at that point.
Wendy greets her parents when she arrives home
and introduces them to the Lost Boys before having a conversation with Peter on
their roof. Peter claims that before he left one day and never came back, he
used to reside in the Darlings' home. Wendy urges him to stay and says that
growing up could be his finest experience, but Peter feels unprepared. He bids
Wendy and the Lost Boys farewell before returning Tinker Bell to Neverland.
After they get back to Neverland, Hook and Smee
are both seen to have survived the fall. Hook beams broadly as he scans the
skies and observes Peter returning to the ship.
