“Ghosted”
Movie Review
Adapted from a Reese and Wernick story, Ghosted is a 2023
American romantic action-adventure comedy film that is directed by Dexter
Fletcher and written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Chris McKenna, and Erik
Sommers. Chris Evans and Ana de Armas are the movie's stars. April 2023 was the
date. Critics gave the movie unfavorable reviews, faulting Fletcher's
directing, the script, and the lack of chemistry between Evans and de Armas.
While between missions, Sadie, an accomplished but now
depressed CIA agent, encounters Cole, a charming but romantically desperate
farmer, and seller. Despite their early disagreements, the two ended up getting
along and went on a lengthy date that ended in sex. Cole texts Sadie when he
gets home, but she doesn't reply. Cole's sister assumes Sadie is
"ghosting" him because of his overbearing demand for connection. He
is ridiculed, but his family persuades him to surprise her in London after he
locates her using a tracker on his inhaler.
When Cole gets to London, he starts looking for Sadie. He
enters a trap set by arms dealers for a CIA agent known as "Taxman"
just as he is about to locate her. He is given drugs and taken to a Pakistani
cave. Cole is being tortured by people who mistake him for the Taxman and try
to get a password from him. Cole is saved by a disguised assailant who sneaks
into the cave and reveals themselves to be Sadie, also known as the
"Taxman." After a protracted chase through Khyber Pass, the two
manage to get away from their captors, who turn out to be working for a
disgraced French Intelligence agent named Leveque. Leveque is trying to sell
"Aztec," a bioweapon that he has in his possession but does not have
the key to unlock.
In a neighboring town, Cole and Sadie hideout. The two
dispute over lies they had previously told. Sadie claimed to be an art curator
to Cole, and Cole claimed to have traveled the world to impress Sadie. They run
across Marco, an old acquaintance and Sadie's lover, who cautions Cole against
dating Sadie because, much to Cole's dismay, she is more interested in the
success of a mission than the life of a partner. In order to allow Sadie to
carry out her job, Marco offers to send Cole back to the US. However, their
plan is derailed when Leveque places a price on Cole. After Cole and Sadie are
tossed between bounty hunters, who unintentionally murder everyone and let the
two escape, Marco is slain by a bounty hunter. Cole admits that the torturers
were attempting to get the passcode out of him while he was trying to escape.
When Sadie learns this, she comes up with a scheme to lure Cole into a
confrontation with the Aztecs while also putting Cole to sleep.
Sadie delivers Cole to Leveque and collects the Taxman's
prize. Before Leveque leaves and sends his main goon, Wagner, to unlock Aztec
on a plane with Cole and Sadie, the three have a meeting. Up until Wagner comes
across a picture of Cole and Sadie in bed together, their plan stays the same.
Cole and Sadie and Wagner and his goon get into a brawl inside the cabin. Cole
and Sadie manage to subdue the henchman for a while, but Sadie is badly hurt
and begs Cole to jump with the Aztecs and leave her behind. While grabbing
Sadie and leaving the plane, Cole takes the Aztecs.
Cole is delivered to Leveque by Sadie, who also collects
the Taxman's bounty. The three get together before Leveque leaves and sends
Wagner, his chief goon, to free the Aztecs while Cole and Sadie are on a plane.
Until Wagner discovers a picture of Cole and Sadie in bed together, their
strategy remains unchanged. Cole and Sadie get into a brawl in the cabin with
Wagner and his goon. Sadie is gravely hurt and begs Cole to jump out with the
Aztecs and leave her behind even if Cole briefly defeats the henchman. Although
Cole grabs Sadie and leaves the plane, the Aztecs are his.
The two arrive on an island, where Cole successfully heals
Sadie's wounds with resources found there while also reuniting them. In order
to attack the island, Wagner tracks the Aztecs and puts together a team. Wagner
escapes with the Aztecs, but Cole and Sadie are ambushed and saved by the
Marines. Sadie receives a censure and suspension at CIA Headquarters for
allowing the Aztecs to flee. Cole is once more unhappy when Sadie apologizes
for placing Cole's life before the Aztecs and exhorts Sadie to rediscover
caring for others. Despite the agents' initial mistrust of Cole, they come to
appreciate his invaluable assistance in cracking the Aztec passcode. The agents
come up with a scheme to have Cole continue to pose as the Taxman and lure
Leveque, who is getting anxious due to mounting pressure from Mr. Utami, his
customer.
Cole and Leveque were scheduled to meet at an exclusive
dining establishment by the agents. Cole is encouraged to feel he is fully
safe, but Leveque's men kill the field agents right away. Cole decides to carry
out the task. When Cole, Leveque, and Mr. Utami first meet, things start to go
awry until Sadie arrives to assist Cole and reveals herself to be the real
Taxman. She gives Mr. Utami the passcode for $10,000,000 and sells it to him.
As an escape strategy, she then sets up a $10,000,000 bounty on Leveque. Bounty
hunters, Utami and Leveque's men, Cole and Sadie, and others cause chaos to
break out in the restaurant. Leveque kills Utami but is ultimately killed after
being pushed through the window by Sadie's firing, who also retrieves Aztec.
Wagner is killed by Cole after being thrown into a gear mechanism. Sadie also
recovers Aztec. Finding time for one another between and during Sadie's
missions, they renew their love and start a formal relationship.
