Review
In 2023, Michael B. Jordan will star in and direct the American
sports drama Creed III, which was written by Ryan Coogler and Zach Baylin. The
movie, which is also the third in the Creed series and ninth overall in the
Rocky movie series, is the follow-up to Creed 11. Together with Tessa Thompson,
Jonathan Majors, Wood Harris, Florian Munteanu, and Phylicia Rashad, it also
features these actors. The first movie in the franchise sans Sylvester Stallone
is this one.
The third Creed movie tells a suspenseful story about the past
snooping in to mess with the present and ruin the future. Jordan returns to the
Creed franchise in Creed 3 as boxing champion Adonis Creed, against Jonathan
Majors, who plays his childhood friend Dame, a character with unfinished business.
Jordan makes a triumphant debut as a filmmaker, expertly navigating the
action-packed boxing scenes. Although the book by Zach Baylin and Keenan
Coogler merely offers enough to keep it from becoming forgettable, Jordan's
direction completes the picture and offers satisfying pleasure.
Adonis Creed has finally made the decision to retire from boxing
after dominating the sport for so long in order to focus on his family and
coaching the next generation of boxers. But, the tranquility that Creed has
found for himself in retirement is disturbed when Damian Anderson, a boyhood
friend, and previous prodigy, reappears after serving a lengthy jail sentence.
Dame causes issues for his former friend to demonstrate that he has nothing to
lose and everything to gain and that he is the greatest in the business. He is
eager to establish his rightfulness for a chance in the ring.
With Creed III, Michael B. Jordan makes a strong debut as a
filmmaker. It wasn't easy to expand on the much-adored Rocky series, but Jordan
succeeds despite the script's constraints. The anime elements that are peppered
throughout the film may be of assistance to viewers. The boxing scenes are
excellent because Jordan uses purposeful close-ups and wonderfully timed slow
motion to depict the passion of the battles. It would have been simple for the
inexperienced director to fall back on what has already been done, but in the
end, the inventiveness with which he shot this movie paid off.
Other than Jordan's directing, Jonathan Majors' portrayal of
Damian "Dame" Anderson is the one constant source of amusement.
Longtime admirers of the actor shouldn't be surprised, but Majors' is a force
to be reckoned with. He gives a complex, nuanced performance that is sure to
keep audiences engrossed in the picture. Jordan also performs admirably, but it
was clear that he was splitting his time between acting and directing. His
dedication to the physicality of the part and the character's mental tenacity,
though, is impressive.
Creed III is an excellent addition to the long-running Rocky
franchise and marks Jordan's strong and assured screen debut. Even though the
storyline hardly does him justice, Majors gives a great performance in the
movie. Yet, the actors work around the tired plot to deliver engaging and
compelling performances that are sure to draw in viewers. Although having a
similar running time to the first two movies in the series, Creed III moves
quickly because to director Neil Jordan's inventiveness and the actors, who
give it their all to make it all work.
