“Somebody I Used to Know”

Movie Review

The American romance comedy 'Someone I used to Know', starring Alison Brie, Jay Ellis, and Kiersey Clemons, was written and directed by Dave Franco. Dessert Island is a popular but fading reality TV program that is run by Ally. She manipulates the season's winning contestant to break down in tears while discussing her divorce on camera in an effort to save the show from being canceled. The show does not receive a second season despite the increase in ratings.

Ally faces withdrawal because she has no social life outside of work. For the first time in years, she chooses to take a break and travel to Leavenworth, Washington, to see her mother. She meets Sean, her ex-boyfriend, in a pub. They get along well and spend the evening going through old recollections in the neighborhood.

When Sean drops Ally off at home in the morning, she gives him a kiss and opens the door for him. He declines, emphasizing the briefness of her presence. Later that day, when Ally goes to his house to apologize, Sean's family is hosting a party there and invites her inside. When she later learns that Cassidy is Sean's fiancée and that this is their wedding weekend, she meets a new woman named Cassidy. Jojo, Sean's mother, insisted Ally record the incident.

After drinks, Ally learns from Sean's buddy Benny about Cassidy's mystery past: she's estranged from her parents, who won't be at the wedding, and she only met Sean six months ago. He also says that Sean was looking for Ally when they met because he knew she was in the pub. Ally makes the decision to try to rekindle her relationship with Sean.

In an effort to make Ally appear awful, Cassidy invites her to perform with her punk rock band onstage. She is cordial and nice with Sean's other pals, but she is obviously uncomfortable with his ex being present at the wedding. She admits to Ally that she finds it difficult to give up her band after getting married. Ally sees similarities between Cassidy and the younger version of herself. Sean, meanwhile, is preoccupied by Ally and Cassidy's growing intimacy.

Dessert Island is available for another season on a streaming service. Ally schedules a meeting. She asks Kayla, her assistant, to send Cassidy's parents an anonymous invitation to the wedding. When they arrive, Cassidy is enraged at Sean because she thinks he invited them and cancels the wedding. Sean is left devastated and perplexed when Ally declines to take responsibility.

She and Sean are talking about the past in her room. He wishes she had stayed, but Ally is content that she has a fulfilling work. She prompts Sean to consider the possibility that he is suppressing Cassidy in a similar manner to how he did with her when they were dating. Also, she exhorts Cassidy to struggle to maintain her band. Sean retracts her cancellation of the wedding after apologizing. Once more, Ally departs for her mother's home.

A second season of Dessert Island is confirmed, but Ally decides to hand over show management to Kayla. Six months later, Ally oversees a different program on nudism, a subject that is more in line with her interests. An assistant who had previously declined her advances upon her after the day's shooting. She claims to be visiting her mother but that the next weekend she will be free.

Somebody I Used to Know, directed by Dave Franco, is a well-known film. Together with the movie's leading actress, Alison Brie, Franco co-wrote the script, resulting in a more unconventional work of art. Despite having a sluggish beginning, Somebody I Used to Know offers a unique spin on common rom-com clichés and provides an enjoyable ride.
