"THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN"

MOVIE REVIEW.

The Magnificent Seven is a 1960 American Western film directed by John Sturges. William Roberts' screenplay is an Old West-style remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai. Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn and Horst Buchholz line up as a group of seven gunslingers, with Eli Wallach as their main antagonist. The seven title characters are assigned to protect a small village in Mexico from a band of bandits led by Wallach.

A gang led by Calvera periodically raids a poor Mexican village for food and supplies. After a recent raid, when Calvera kills a villager, the village leaders decide they've had enough. On the advice of the village elder, they decide to fight back. Three villagers ride into a town just inside the American border, hoping to grab some valuables and exchange weapons. They are inspired by Chris Adams, a seasoned Cajun gunslinger, and turn to him for advice. Chris says the gunslingers are hired to protect the village because "men are cheaper than guns." At first Chris agrees to help them recruit the men and eventually decides to lead the team. Despite a meager reward, he found five armed gunmen.
