“Tar”

Movie Review

‘Tar’ is a psychological drama written, produced and directed by Todd Field about the downfall of a world-renowned classical composer and conductor. The film stars Cate Blanchett, Nomi Merland, Nina Hoss and Mark Strong. Whether art can be separated from the artist, Tar has long struck a chord with anyone who has spent time entertaining someone who has done some sometimes unforgivable act. While the film isn't preachy and director Field doesn't indulge in establishing a moral compass, Tar is more compelling because it focuses on telling a story that's layered, nuanced and powerful.

Lydia Tar played by Cate Blanchett is a conductor and classical composer. Lydia is at the height of her career—she's published a glowing New Yorker article about her importance, she's a guest lecturer at Juilliard, she's busy promoting her new memoir, and she's composed new music to perform in Berlin. A conductor of the Philharmonic, she is the first woman to hold such a prestigious position. However, Lydia's assistant Francesca, played by Nomi Merlant, threatens to upend her entire career.
