“Smile”

Movie Review

Written and directed by Parker Finn, the horror film 'Smile' is absolutely terrifying. Based on Finn's 2020 short film Laura Hasnut Slept, in which the heroine refuses to sleep because of the smiling man she sees in her dreams, 'Smile' takes that idea and expands it, often to great effect. The film has a strong central cast, and while its exploration of trauma and mental illness is surface-level, the plot and intrigue are haunting to drive the story forward.

Dr. Rose Cotter, played by Sosie Bacon is a therapist who watches as one of her patients, who claims she’s seeing visions and is being haunted by a smiling entity that wears people’s faces like masks, die by suicide. The patient in question had seen his professor commit suicide four days earlier. After the incident, Rose begins seeing visions of herself. Sometimes, the entity appears as the people it knows; In other cases, it shows up as complete strangers. Although Rose's mental health deteriorates and she begins to think she is cursed, her friend Kal PeNn, sister Holly, Gillian Zinser, fiancé Trevor, and Jesse D. Usher or the therapist Robin Wiegert believed her. The more Rose sees the smile, the more desperate she grows, seeking the help of Joel, Kyle Gallner, her ex, and a police officer, hoping to find a way to stop the curse before it's too late.
