"RIDER ON THE RAIN"

MOVIE REVIEW.

“Rider on the Rain” is a 1970 French mystery thriller film starring Charles Bronson, directed by René Clement, written by Sébastien Japrisot, produced by Serge Silberman, and with a soundtrack composed by Francis Loy.

Opening with a quote from Lewis Carroll suggesting that the heroine is like Alice in Wonderland, the film opens on a rainy autumn afternoon in a small resort on the south coast of France.

Mellie, newly married Tony, an off-duty flight navigator, sees a strange man getting off the bus. The next day, while trying on a wedding dress at a store, she finds the man spying on her. When she goes home, he breaks into the house, ties her up and rapes her. After freeing herself, she realizes he's still in the house, grabs a gun and kills him. When her jealous husband returned, she drove the body over a cliff into the sea without telling him.

The next day, an American called Dobbs, who was not invited to the wedding, talks to her. A dead body has been found and he claims she killed him, which she denies. The next day, when her husband is absent again, Dobbs sneaks into their home and randomly interrogates Mellie. She begins to think that the rapist may have done business with Tony and that drugs were involved, which is why Dobbs is so persistent. She goes to the bank with him and takes everything she has and gives it to him. But he doesn't need money, that's true.
