"Piggy" is a Spanish horror film written and directed by Carlotta Pereda, full of horrible characters doing horrible things, and a near-death protagonist caught in a moral dilemma between a murderer and her tormentors. When it comes to horror movies, disturbing moments don't always come from blood and violence. In Piggy, horror emerges from the brutality of people and their treatment of the film's protagonist. Piggy has a slow-burn intensity that culminates in a great ending, and while the film has tight writing and great pacing in places, it's still a satisfying watch.
Sarah, played by Laura Galan, is a teenage girl who is mercilessly teased and bullied by Macca, Rosie and Claudia, played by Claudia Salas, Camille Aguilar and Irene Ferreiro, respectively, because of her weight. They call Sarah "Piggy" and torture and drown her for fun. While no one seems willing to stand up for Sara, not even her own mother, played by Carmen Machi, Sara must slim down and lose weight in response to her threat, a stranger played by Richard Holmes who agrees to free Sara from her bullies, Mean Girls kidnaps the trio. Sarah walks up to the kidnapper, both in awe of him and afraid of what he might do. When the pool's lifeguard and a maid are found dead, Sarah's small town begins to investigate what's going on, questioning her about the disappearances of Macca, Rosie, and Claudia.
