The film is set in 1997 in Changsha, Hunan Province, Central China. One day, elementary school student Xu Yi, played by Xia Zixuan, helps fellow student Cao Fang, role played by Zhang Xiran down a tree when she seems stuck. He offers a tissue for her sneezing allergy. They argue when she tries to threaten him; When he checks where she is at school, he hears that she has transferred.
12 years later, in 2009, coincidentally, Xu Yi, now played by Li Xiaoqian, runs into Gao Fang, now played by Gui Yuchen, at a preschool college where he studies screenwriting and directing. She denies being Gao Fang and says her name is Gao Xiaonan, but doesn't say why she changed it. While dining with her and her best friend Lily, played by Xiu Yuxiu, she runs away and gets into the car of rich-kid student friend Zhou Tao, played by Ding Guanzen. Xu Yi learns that both of her parents are now dead, that she is in debt and working several part-time jobs on her way to college. Her name change was to give her a fresh start in life. Gao Xiaonan is a year behind at Xu Yi College. He apologizes to her for insisting and she eventually forgives him. On the day of their chance meeting, she reveals that her boyfriend left her while he was going to study in New York. She poses as his girlfriend when they walk together one evening and bump into some old high school friends and an ex-girlfriend named Zhang Wenwen, played by Jiang Jujun. Later, Xu Yi and Gao Xianan celebrate her 20th birthday by watching the sunrise together. Another evening, caught in the rain, the two go to a hotel together and watch Casablanca on TV; But the evening suddenly ends in a surprising way. When Xu Yi befriends Liu Xiuan, a student played by Xu Tongxin, Gao Xiaonan backs off and advises them to be best friends. Liu Xuan introduces a male friend named Chen Shi to their circle. Parallel to all of this, Xu Yi's best friend, Deng Xiang, has an on-and-off relationship with Cao Xiaonan's best friend, Lily. But then, at the college's 2011 graduation ceremony, something happens that causes Cao Xiaonan to disappear from Xu Yi's life again.
