The year is 1961 and Kempton Bunton, played by Jim Broadbent, is a 60-year-old taxi driver and self-educated man from Newcastle. The film opens with Kempton in the dock at Court Number one at the Old Bailey, accused of stealing Goya's portrait of Lord Wellington from London's National Gallery. He pleaded not guilty and we are then taken back 6 months to the spring of 1961.
