Richard Burton – The Legendary Actor Remembrance |

Richard Burton was born on 10 November 1925 in Pontydfen, South Wales. His original name was Richard Walter Jenkins Jr. Jenkins, the twelfth child of a poor coal miner, lost his mother when he was two years old. He would be taken under the tutelage of a teacher named Philip Burton, who would become the boy's guardian and introduce him to the world of theatre.

Jenkins made his London debut as a young Welshman in The Druid's Rest, taking the surname Burton. Burton won a scholarship to Oxford University and later joined the British Air Force during the war.

After leaving the army in 1947, he continued his stage career, appearing in ‘A Note to Burning Women’ with Sir John Gielgud and becoming known for his remarkable voice and delivery. Burton made his film debut in 1949 in ‘The Last Days of the Dolphin’. In the same year he married actress Sybil Williams; The couple would eventually have two daughters.
