Doctor Zhivago – (1965)

Movie Review

Doctor Zhivago is a 1965 epic historical romantic film directed by David Lean, based on the 1957 novel by Boris Pasternak, with a screenplay by Robert Bolt. The story takes place in Russia during first World War and the Russian Civil War. Yuri Zhivago, played by Omar Sharif, is a young doctor raised by his aunt and uncle after his father's suicide. Yuri falls in love with the beautiful Lara Kuyscher, played by Julie Christie, who is romantically involved with her mother's boyfriend, Viktor Komarovsky, a naive businessman played by Rod Steiger. However, Yuri is married to his cousin Tonya, played by Geraldine Chaplin. But when he and Laura meet again years later, the spark of love reignites. Starring Tom Courtenay, Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness, Ralph Richardson, Siobhan McKenna, and Rita Tushingham.

Although popular in the West, Pasternak's book was banned in the Soviet Union for decades. Because of this, the film could not be made in the Soviet Union and was shot in Spain instead. It is an international co-production between MGM and Italian producer Carlo Ponti.
