Blood Red Sky, is a thrilling blend of action, horror, and vampire mythology, masterfully directed by Peter Thorwarth, who co-wrote the screenplay with Stefan Holtz. Released on Netflix on July 23, 2021, the film features a strong ensemble cast, including Peri Baumeister, Roland Møller, Chidi Ajufo, and Alexander Scheer. It takes the classic hijacking trope and infuses it with supernatural horror, making it a unique and compelling watch.
The story follows Nadja, a German widow, and her young son Elias as they prepare to board a flight to New York. Nadja, who appears to be suffering from leukemia, is seeking medical treatment. At the airport, Elias befriends a passenger named Farid, while Nadja struggles with the side effects of her medication, which seem to cause her severe discomfort.
As the passengers settle into the overnight flight, a group of hijackers, including the co-pilot Bastian, murders the sky marshals and sabotages the black box, making the plane undetectable. Their leader, Berg, declares control of the aircraft and demands that everyone comply while they await ransom. Meanwhile, Elias attempts to hide, and Nadja follows him. A ruthless hijacker named Eightball discovers them and shoots Nadja. Believing her to be dead, the hijackers force Farid to record a statement framing the incident as an Islamic terrorist attack, ensuring the plane will be shot down.
However, Nadja regains consciousness and remembers a traumatic past event—the night her husband, Nikolai, was murdered. After their car broke down, he sought help from a nearby farmhouse but never returned. When Nadja searched for him, she was bitten by a vampire. The vampire was later killed by sunrise, but Nadja, now turned, sought answers in the farmhouse. There, she was attacked by an elderly vampire who wanted to prevent the spread of the curse. Nadja fought back, killed him, and took vials of vampire suppressant before escaping.
On the plane, Nadja sneaks into the cargo hold, removes the contacts and dentures hiding her vampiric features, and drinks the blood of a dog to regain her strength. A hijacker catches her in the act, forcing her to kill and feed on him, which triggers her full transformation into a vampire. She soon allies with Farid and a student named Mohammed to take back control of the plane. They thwart the hijackers' escape attempt and return to their original flight path. When Berg tries to reclaim the cockpit, Nadja attacks and bites him, stopping him before he fully turns into a vampire.
The hijackers order Eightball to eliminate Nadja. He overpowers her using UV light, extracts her blood, and prepares to stake her, but Elias accidentally depressurizes the cabin using Berg's gun. As Mohammed suffocates, the hijackers regain control and stabilize the plane. Eightball injects himself with Nadja’s blood, transforming into a vampire before she can kill him. He then turns on the hijackers, massacring all but Bastian. With most of the plane's passengers now aware of the supernatural danger, they arm themselves. Nadja assures them that she is on their side, and together they manage to trap Eightball in the cargo hold.
Bastian informs Nadja that they lack enough fuel to reach New York and must land soon. A dying passenger, desperate to survive, releases Eightball in hopes of being turned. Instead, Eightball kills him and begins infecting other passengers, turning the majority into vampires. Realizing that if the plane lands, the vampires will spread uncontrollably, Nadja decides to sacrifice herself by detonating the hijackers' explosives. However, Elias intervenes and takes the detonator himself. He is soon surrounded by the turned passengers but manages to grab the device. Before he can activate it, Nadja—having fully embraced her vampiric instincts—feeds on Bastian to regain strength.
Just as she attempts to rescue Elias, Eightball attacks and drains her blood, weakening her severely. As he sets his sights on Elias, Farid steers the plane into the morning sun, causing Eightball to burn alive and plummet to his death. Elias, desperate to save his mother, offers his own blood, but she refuses, knowing she cannot control herself. Instead, she flees, understanding that staying with him would put him in grave danger.
The plane crash-lands at an RAF base in Scotland. Despite Elias and Farid’s desperate warnings, the authorities ignore them and board the plane in search of survivors, only to be slaughtered by the vampire horde. Elias, realizing that his mother is now beyond saving, retrieves the detonator he had hidden in his teddy bear. Watching Nadja feed on a soldier, he makes the heart-wrenching decision to activate the explosives, seemingly killing her and the remaining vampires.
In the aftermath, Farid is released from custody and embraces Elias, acknowledging the boy's immense bravery. The film concludes on a somber note, leaving the audience to ponder the cost of survival and the tragic fate of a mother who fought against her monstrous nature to protect her son.
Blood Red Sky masterfully combines high-stakes action with supernatural horror, delivering an emotionally charged and visually gripping cinematic experience. Peri Baumeister’s performance as Nadja is both haunting and deeply moving, portraying a mother’s unwavering love despite the monstrous curse she bears. Alexander Scheer’s portrayal of Eightball adds a chilling presence, elevating the tension throughout the film. With its unique premise, intense action sequences, and compelling character dynamics, Blood Red Sky stands out as an unforgettable entry in the horror-thriller genre.
