Movie Review
Renfield
is a Chris McKay-directed, Ryan Ridley-penned, and Chris McKay-produced
American supernatural horror comedy film based on a Robert Kirkman short story.
starring Nicholas Hoult in the title role and Nicolas Cage as Dracula, with
Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, and Shohreh Aghdashloo in supporting
parts, is a direct sequel to Dracula, which was published in 1931 and features
characters from the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. The release date for
Renfield is set for April 14, 2023.
R M Renfield, a lawyer who was intending to help broker a land deal when Count Dracula first met him in the early 20th century, wound up becoming the vampire lord's familiar. Renfield has relied on mystical superpowers that are triggered by eating bugs for many years. Dracula and his companion relocate to New Orleans to recover after Dracula just had a close encounter with some vampire hunters who nearly murdered him. Renfield finds a 12-Step self-help group for codependents, and he plans to utilize the members there to look for abusive partners he can kill and feed to Dracula without feeling guilty. He pursues a narcissistic boyfriend to a warehouse where there are stolen drugs, and while he is beating up several low-level criminals, an assassin hired by the Lobo crime family, which first brought the drugs into the city, attacks them all.
Renfield
shoots the assassin and makes an effort to find Teddy Lobo, the guy who hired
him, but Teddy rushes away, so Renfield brings the bodies back to Dracula's
hideout in the cellar of a run-down hospital. When Teddy speeds through the
sobriety checkpoint and throws cocaine bricks at the police as weapons, Rebecca
Quincy, a second-generation police officer, sees an opportunity to capture
Teddy and remove a high-level criminal off the streets. Teddy has quickly
released from custody at the police station thanks to the Lobos' cooperation
with the force, and Rebecca is irritated when Quincy confronts her sister Kate,
who has also committed her life to serving the law but is building a complex
case with the FBI.
Renfield
is informed by Dracula that the number of convicts he has brought is
insufficient and that the vampire actually craves the blood of a pure and
innocent person. With the help of hints left at the crime scene, Quincy is
guided to the restaurant where Renfield kidnaps commoners. The two are involved
in an attempt on Quincy's life that Teddy feels compelled to launch in order to
restore the Lobos' reputation for ferocity. As a result of Renfield and Quincy
defending themselves, numerous gang members are killed, and Teddy is forced to
flee for his life.
Teddy's
mother Bellafrancesca gives him the assignment to find Dracula while Renfield
is away because he slaughtered all of her foot troops. While Renfield has taken
to heart the advice of his self-help group and desires to forge a life for
himself independent from his dark overlord, the two agree to establish an
alliance. He sets up an apartment, adopts a cooperative attitude, and provides
a statement to the police to aid them in their attempt to finally put an end to
the Lobos. After learning of Renfield's treachery, Dracula decimates the
12-step program in front of his former servant.
When
Quincy shows up, he discovers Renfield surrounded by dead people. She takes him
into custody and is then surrounded by Lobos and policemen who are also out to
get Renfield. She struggles to escape with her prisoner after refusing to give
him up. The following morning, she discovers that Renfield has saved her life.
He then goes on to reveal his true background and confirm his desire to change
for the better. A bunch of corrupt police is overcome by the two before they
decide to raid the Lobos headquarters. However, when they arrive, they discover
that Dracula has given Teddy and more than a dozen other gang members all of
Renfield's magical powers.
When
Quincy arrives to stop Dracula, she discovers that her sister has been severely
injured and can only be saved by the healing powers of Dracula's blood, which
he will provide in exchange for Rebecca's allegiance. She deceives Dracula, who
then engages in a last showdown with Renfield and Quincy until the two work
together to imprison him in a magical circle. The vampire is either finally
destroyed or given a very difficult time repairing his body after the two of
them beat him into pieces, seize plenty of his healing blood, and divide up the
fragments of his corpse into concrete that they disperse throughout the water
system. Renfield brings his self-help group members back to life at the end of
the movie, leaving him inspired to start over.
