“Scream VI”
Movie Review
The 2023 American horror movie Scream VI was written by James
Vanderbilt and Guy Busick and directed by Matt Bettimatt-Olpin and Tyler
Gillett. It is the sixth film in the Scream Film Series' sequel. Together with
Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, and
Samara Weaving, the movie stars Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason
Gooding, Jenna Ortega, and Courteney Cox in characters they previously played
in the series.
The third installment of the series, Scream VI, relocates the
setting from the fictitious California town of Woodsboro to New York City and
centers on a new Ghostface that targets the victims of the "Woodsboro
Legacy Attacks." The movie parodies the tendencies of movie franchises and
the subversion of audience expectations while combining the brutality of the
slasher genre with aspects of black humour and a "Whodunit" mystery.
Professor of film studies Laura Crane is lured outside a club in
New York City and killed by Jason Carvey, who is dressed as Ghostface. Jason
and his roommate Greg plan to murder the Carpenter sisters, but when Jason gets
a call from a different Ghostface, who has already killed Greg, Jason is
fatally stabbed.
Sam Carpenter has moved to New York City to live with her sister
Tara, Quinn Bailey, the Meeks-Martin twins Chad and Mindy, Mindy's lover Anika,
and Chad's roommate Ethan. Sam sees Dr. Stone for treatment, but due to an
online hoax claiming she planned the most recent Woodsboro crimes and
implicated Richie Kirsch in them, she is frequently shunned in public. When
Sam's ID and the Ghostface mask worn by Richie and Amber Freeman were
discovered at the scene of Jason's murder, Sam is summoned for questioning by
Detective Wayne Bailey, Quinn's father. Sam receives a call from Ghostface on
Richie's phone while they are traveling to the station; Ghostface then attacks
Tara and kills other onlookers.
The sisters visit FBI special agent Kirby Reed, a survivor of
the 2011 Woodsboro murders, at the station. They then speak with Gale Weathers,
who informs them that Sidney Prescott has fled the country in response to the
latest atrocities. Ghostface kills Dr. Stone while stealing Sam's paperwork and
leaving a second mask that was used in the 2011 killings. Afterwards, in Sam
and Tara's apartment, Quinn is attacked by Ghostface, who also kills Anika.
However, Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad are able to flee owing to the assistance of
Sam's neighbor and boyfriend, Danny.
Following Quinn's passing, Detective Bailey is formally removed
from the case, but he makes a promise to assist in avenging his daughter. Gale
leads the gang to an abandoned theater that she discovered while conducting
research that has been turned into a shrine to the Ghostface assailants,
complete with gear from each round of attacks. After Dewey's death, Ghostface
phones Gale at her apartment tormenting her about it before killing her lover
and attacking her. In time to prevent Ghostface from killing Gale, Tara and Sam
arrive.
To capture Ghostface, the party decides to meet Kirby at the
theater. They become separated on the train station, and the assailant stabs
Mindy. Sam has a vision of her father Billy Loomis at the theater, telling her
to stand up for herself and not to put her trust in others. Sam discovers they
have been locked inside after retrieving Billy's knife from the first murders.
Bailey phones Sam and informs him that he learned that Kirby was
discharged from the FBI months earlier because of his mental instability. When
two Ghostfaces attack the group, Chad appears to have died. Sam and Tara
attempt to flee as Kirby and Bailey show there with weapons drawn. When Bailey
shoots Kirby, a third Ghostface is revealed. He acknowledges planning the
killings with his kids, who are later identified as Quinn and Ethan, to get
revenge on Richie, his oldest son, who was killed. Sam and Tara battle off the
Bailey family, with Sam killing Quinn and Tara stabbing Ethan. Bailey is
subsequently fatally stabbed by Sam after donning her father's Ghostface suit
and calling him in the Ghostface voice. Kirby kills Ethan when he reappears by
smashing the television that killed Stu Macher over his head.
Tara decides to attend treatment, and Sam promises to let her
live her life more on her own terms. Sam looks at her father's Ghostface mask
for a moment before tossing it aside and following Tara into the city as the
still-alive Mindy, Chad, and Kirby are transported to the hospital.
